Class Reflection Nov. 25th

The guest speaker today was focused on coding. Directly at the beginning of the presentation, the speaker made it clear that the teachers do NOT need to be experts on this subject, but they need to be able to know how to use it and possibly integrate it into the classroom, even if it is only in a small way.

Hands-on portion: For the game, I chose I decided on the Scratch app. This was my choice because, at my Wednesday visits, the teacher and class I am observing are working on Scratch right now. Most of the kids have already played this game and are nearly experts on the game. Whereas me in this class attempting to make my ’Sprite1’ either say hello or move is a challenge in itself. This shows how advanced the new generation is concerning technology and coding. Even while the Scratch game instructions were being taught by the teacher on Wednesday’s visit, some of the students knew how to make more advanced commands and adjustments to there scratch story. I would defiantly love to incorporate this game into my class, however, the game can take a turn as individuals can design their characters and even add fake blood to there character. They can also make it so the character attacks another character which would be linked to violence which may pose a problem with parents if students go home and discuss this part. Overall, there are negatives and positives to using this as it gets the students to start to develop their cognitive thinking.

Class reflection: Presentations

After the conference section of the class, the second half was witnessing the first few class presentations for their tech inquiry projects. I thought Val did a great job with only alotting 1 group per topic to be used as the rest of the class was able to learn new things from different topics rather than the same. A lot of these techniques/technology allowed me to gain valuable ideas and resources that I will hope to implement in my future years as a teacher.

  1. Josh. This presentation was based on google apps and how you can use them to postively affect youth, and also how they could potentially be used as negatives.
  2. Mikaela. This topic was the effect of technology on literacy and lagnuage and all the tools available online or technology itself that can help students develop language and literacy attributes.
  3. Lauren, Leona, Maxie, & Conrad. The topic for this presentation was mindfulness apps in the classroom, how it plays a role in ones life and what does mindfulness mean. This was extremely helpful as they each provided an app that they thought would benefit the classroom experience or solely ones mental health. Apps included were; ‘Stop, Breath & Think Kids’, ‘Simple Habit’ and ‘Cosmic Kids’.
  4. Jessica, Madi, Kayleigh & Jess. Topic for this was how to use technology to aid students with learning disabilities in the classroom. This group also provided useful apps and games to assist students and improve the classroom environment.

Nov. 18th Class Reflection

For today’s class, there was a mini field trip that we embarked in. We were able to walk over to the Cornett building to see the conference rooms that UVIC has to offer and the different (advanced) technology that is provided in these rooms. Originally there was supposed to be a guest speaker to teach this lesson, however, the video chat did not work so Val quickly took over and taught this for us. This was another favourite class of mine as it provided me again with a new perspective on learning. The majority of this lesson focused on multi-access which is having a computer and face-to-face course option. This was something Val was clearly passionate about since she revealed to us how she fought to have this at uvic. This option was extremely useful for those who have health conditions or live in rural areas where transportation would have been longer than the actual class lecture space. Inclusion is what stuck out most when Val discussed the benefits of having such technology/options. An example of a positive use of this would be if a student suffered from a severe health issue, and instead of opting out and missing their entire elementary/highs school experience they could use video chat through a robot that could still incorporate the student into social cues and friendship opportunities. As well as they would be able to get the education they deserve at the same price as the rest (minus the expense for the robot which is sometimes covered). Multimodality is a new and advanced way of progressing into the future of inclusion where each student will receive the opportunity to learn and grow.

Update #3 Final Update

With presentation day tomorrow, each of us finalized our slides today. As a collective group we made the unanimous decision to use google slides rather than powerpoint as it is better for tracking progress for each individual and the best tool to use for sharing when working on a presentation in a group. With the end of the semester coming up soon, each of us are extremely busy with jobs, homework, studying and final assignments. Therefore we weren’t able to meet up before presenting so google slides saved the day with being the best tool for us to each have access to it from our seperate homes. For my editing of my slides I put each of them into grammarly (another great grammer and editing tool to use and implement in the classroom), as well as adding images to make it more engaging. We decided to add initials to each of the slides we were going to present this way each of us had sufficient time to prepare and no confusion would occur when presentation day  came. With our presentation needing to be at the minimum 15 minutes long, I think with the amount of work everyone has put into this project it is sure to engage the class and be informative while following the criteria!

Update #2 Tech Inquiry

Today we had an extremely engaging and creative addition added to our presentation by Morgan. After discussing as a group how we could make our presenation more ‘eye catching’ or interactive, she had the great idea of creating a Kahoot game that consisted of some questions on the topics we are covering. This was great because this added a different platform of technology to our presentation. This also gave each of us a type of technology that could be beneficial and engaging to our future classroom.
The steps to create a Kahoot were straight forward as well, all you had to do was (1) visit the website (2) choose your role (3) give your school if applicable and (4) Create a username, add your email and password. By using Kahoot, thought provoking questions can be implemented in the classroom as a form of reflecting on what the students know. It is also easy to use and highly engaging while being inclusive as well. Overall, I learned a great deal about Kahoot and how to properly integrate it into future classes successfully such as in our upcoming  presenation.

November 4th Class Reflection (Minecraft)

Today’s class was one I was most eager about as I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. At first, I could not wrap my head around the idea that Minecraft could potentially be used positively in a classroom. However, after listening to the students who came in as guest speakers from Colquitz and Spectrum school, I have officially changed my mind. These children vouched for Minecraft in such a profound way, for example, one student told us how after playing Minecraft he discovered that in the future he hopes to become an architect. The teacher who also came into to discuss the topic mentioned how she uses Minecraft for math (patterns), socials, art, teamwork, and spelling. There are also specific controls that allow the teacher to keep track of the student’s games and progress, she even demonstrated with the class how she can freeze games. The pausing of games is a good use of keeping this game safe and educational. After playing the game I was able to see what the appeal was, it was very addictive and really tested your limits as you need to use critical thinking as to how to succeed or build in the game (depending on what the mode was put on). There was a clear message of collaboration being present as whenever the UVIC students didn’t know how to move their player etc, the middle school students would come over and assist us in any questions we had. My favourite part was how there were different modes that could be implemented in the game such as survival mode or free play. Overall this presentation was extremely informative as it provided me with a new perspective on technology in the classroom.

Class reflection on PSII school visit

Rather than a guest speaker presentation in our regular classroom, the technology class embarked on a school visit in downtown Victoria, called the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry. This school visit was unlike anything I have seen or experienced before, with the newest of technology surrounding every inch of the school and no paper insight I was intrigued to learn more. The school’s premise is based off the idea that students are in charge of their own learning, meaning they could advance to the next ‘grade’ or ‘level’ as fast or slow as they please. This even went as far as completing grade 12 early and beginning in online first year university courses. There is a main website each individual enrolled in the school gets which has a list of things that must be completed before you graduate, which I found interesting as you didn’t have to complete grade 8 math in order to progress to grade 9 math which is an foreign concept to me. Although I do find this new way of teaching to be fascinating, I also believe that there is no gradual release of responsibility. Instead it is a bombarding of responsibility at the beginning of ones high school education. Therefore, I believe there should be a balance between the traditional BC schools and this enhanced one. A fusion of pen and paper with a gradual release of responsibility AND the incorporation of ore inquiry based learning with technology being on the forefront.

October 7th class reflection

The focus of todays class was the use of technology and how to gain a better grasp and comprehension of how to use the internet safely and online presence. Most of the big topics that had my classmates dropping there jaw I was already made aware of when during my grade 12 year of high school, a technology expert came to my class to say a similar speech. He made us aware of the privacy agreement we accept when we sign up for instagram, facebook and especially snapchat. How eventually snapchat will sell and all the photos we believe had disappeared after ‘x’ amount of seconds, will be in the highest bidders hands. However, this presentation today differed as it educated me on the positives that can occur from using technology in the classroom. The main idea that stuck with me was the idea of growing with the children so they can discover what is safe to post and how to use the internet in an appropriate matter. Eventually students will surpass the teacher with staying up to date with the latest technology and at that point one can only hope that they’ve passed on enough of their own knowledge to let the future generation succeed and thrive.

First of Many

Welcome to my first blog!

I am currently a second-year student at the University of Victoria, studying in the Elementary Education program. The cohort I was assigned to seems like a great group of people who I’m excited to be spending the rest of the year with. It’s a diverse yet inclusive team that isn’t competitive, but instead quite encouraging and carries the value of teamwork very highly. When I’m not at school I enjoy hiking, reading, running and hanging out with friends. After our first elementary school visit as a student teacher, I now look forward to Wednesdays as it has quickly become the highlight of my week. My enjoyment toward visiting the schools only confirms that I have chosen the right program and profession. Can’t wait for what is to come in this second year at UVIC.
