With my leftover Orzo due to me putting in the incorrect measurements, I was lucky enough to have leftover and wanted to keep the greek theme going for the next night. I decided to add feta cheese, tomatoes, lemon juice, olive oil, salt & pepper, parsley and even cooked shrimp to add as a protein! Cooking the shrimp was the hardest part to cook as I have never worked with this protein before so this was especially a challenge for me. However, I was able to go over to the trusted youtube and found a tutorial by Gordon Ramsey teaching me how to properly cook the shrimp. Before putting heat on the protein I marinated it for around 2 hours with garlic, oregano and lemon juice just to keep the theme of greek within the dish. Overall 10/10 yet again for the flavour and execution of this meal and very creative use of leftovers to make it seem like a brand new dish!

Rather than a guest speaker presentation in our regular classroom, the technology class embarked on a school visit in downtown Victoria, called the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry. This school visit was unlike anything I have seen or experienced before, with the newest of technology surrounding every inch of the school and no paper insight I was intrigued to learn more. The school’s premise is based off the idea that students are in charge of their own learning, meaning they could advance to the next ‘grade’ or ‘level’ as fast or slow as they please. This even went as far as completing grade 12 early and beginning in online first year university courses. There is a main website each individual enrolled in the school gets which has a list of things that must be completed before you graduate, which I found interesting as you didn’t have to complete grade 8 math in order to progress to grade 9 math which is an foreign concept to me. Although I do find this new way of teaching to be fascinating, I also believe that there is no gradual release of responsibility. Instead it is a bombarding of responsibility at the beginning of ones high school education. Therefore, I believe there should be a balance between the traditional BC schools and this enhanced one. A fusion of pen and paper with a gradual release of responsibility AND the incorporation of ore inquiry based learning with technology being on the forefront.
Tonight’s dinner was based on a Greek dish recipe I found online! This included orzo, pickled red onion, cucumber and tomato salad, greek spiced chicken, tzatziki and green beans! Each of these components on their own seemed to be quite simple, orzo is just a pasta so cooking it was the same as any other type. As for spicing the chicken, the recipe online gave me all the ingredients needed so all I had to do was pick up the spices. This includes marinating the chicken in fresh oregano, onion, garlic, and a lot of lemon juice. As for the salad, I diced up some tomatoes and cucumbers and added olive oil, lemon juice oregano, and feta which you cant see in the photo as it is at the bottom of the plate. I bought the pickled red onions because I didn’tĀ have 2-4 weeks of patience to pickle them myself but the store-bought ones were perfect. If I am being honest, the green beans were about to expire so I just threw those in with some garlic, salt, and pepper! Overall, this dish was amazing and one that I will definitelyĀ be making again on my student budget diet. What isn’t captured in the photo is I proceeded to heat up a naan on the stove and started making almost like a gyro which was even more filling and left me with leftovers for the next day! 10/10 rating for this dish, thankful that the internet provided me with a great recipe.
It is now the week before the midterm is due for EDCI 306 and I have made slight progression. I believe I have reached the goals I set up for myself on my growth plan as I have indeed memorized the chords and order for the chords assigned to each song. I also mentioned in my growth plan that I do not have to have the songs completely perfected yet. I gave myself room for error and time for more practice as I mentioned how each song does not have to be played fluently by the midterm. With that being said, I have perfected the Sam Smith song, therefore, exceeding the goals I had set up for myself by the halfway point of this semester. With still a sufficient amount of time left before the final, I believe I will be able to master the last two songs required of me. With one week left until the midterm, I discovered that I may have procrastinated more than I would have liked. In the future, to accomplish the goal I have set up for myself for the final, I will dedicate more time to practicing. As well as time management. By completing the homework needed for my other classes I will be able to set aside time solely for attempting to complete my musical growth plan goals and perfecting each song. This is the only way I will meet the objectives by the final, and the only way I will stay on the right track of beating my procrastinating nature.
It has been four weeks since I have begun learning the ukulele I can say I can successfully execute āStay With Meā by Sam Smith. After strenuous practice of playing with the tutorial and rotating from playing without background music, I was able to hear the song playing in my head whilst strumming the chords. As for āIsland in the Sunā by Weezer, I am making quite a slow progression for the transition of D chord to G chord still. However, I am determined that I will get it, if not by the midterm then by the final. As for āCounting Starsā by One Republic, the chord transition especially from C to G and G to F, has seen to be a challenge. At this point frustration is my biggest obstacle I will need to overcome as when I cant get it for the thirtieth try, I become overwhelmed and frustrated and want to stop. With that being said I donāt because I know the thirtieth time is still better and an improvement from the tenth time and so on. I need to keep my motivation high while continuing to practice each song or else I will succumb to the fear of failing. Memorization of each of the song chords has been the easiest part about playing. The hardest part now is the transition from chord to chord to make each song sound like they are being played with ease. This will only improve with each week, each practice and each time I continue to play the ukulele despite my frustrations with the instrument. I have found some confidence in being able to play the Sam Smith song thus I am hoping this pushes me to continue perfecting the other songs.
It has currently been two weeks since I have picked up the ukulele and attempted to learn some songs from complete scratch. With no previous experience of the ability to read music or play any instrument besides the āchopstickā song on the piano, I knew this was going to be a challenge from the start. By the first week, I managed to agitate my roommates and learn a few basic chords that the simpler songs consist of. This includes C, A, F, E, D, and G as the basis for nearly all the songs I have chosen to play. During my attempt at āisland in the sunā by Weezer, I was extremely excited learning to play this, therefore, I went into the first try with high motivation as this has been a personal favourite song of mine since I was young. However, I realized that the seemingly simple song with four chords played for the majority of the entire song, (E, A, D, & G), was not as easy to execute as I thought. The transition from D to G was going to take more time than I had anticipated. After constant practice with little to no progress, I decided to attempt song number two. I chose āStay With Meā by Sam Smith as it is another favourite song of mine, as well as it came with a step by step tutorial courtesy of Youtube. The chords for this song consisted of A, F, and C. The difficulty with this song came with the strumming pattern. Although it is all down strum it has pauses in between chords where they recommend tapping the ukulele in-between to provide the correct timing. As for āCounting Starsā by One Republic the chords on there own are nothing knew (A, C, G, F), again its the transition of each chord to the next which will only get better with practice. Overall, these past two weeks have taught me that I have some work ahead of me.
The focus of todays class was the use of technology and how to gain a better grasp and comprehension of how to use the internet safely and online presence. Most of the big topics that had my classmates dropping there jaw I was already made aware of when during my grade 12 year of high school, a technology expert came to my class to say a similar speech. He made us aware of the privacy agreement we accept when we sign up for instagram, facebook and especially snapchat. How eventually snapchat will sell and all the photos we believe had disappeared after ‘x’ amount of seconds, will be in the highest bidders hands. However, this presentation today differed as it educated me on the positives that can occur from using technology in the classroom. The main idea that stuck with me was the idea of growing with the children so they can discover what is safe to post and how to use the internet in an appropriate matter. Eventually students will surpass the teacher with staying up to date with the latest technology and at that point one can only hope that they’ve passed on enough of their own knowledge to let the future generation succeed and thrive.
